Worked example: why a 20% sale is not a 20% profit cut

For one item priced at 30, with a unit cost of 12, a 10% revenue fee and a fixed order fee of 0.50, normal profit is 14.50. After a 20% discount, revenue falls to 24 and profit falls to 9.10 — approximately 37.2% less profit per order.

One-unit orderNo discount20% discount
Revenue30.0024.00
Fees3.502.90
Product cost12.0012.00
Estimated profit14.509.10

How the estimate works

Revenue = price × (1 − discount / 100) × quantity.
Fees = revenue × fee rate / 100 + fixed order fee.
Profit = revenue − unit cost × quantity − fees.
Break-even unit price = (unit cost + fixed fee / quantity) / (1 − fee rate / 100).

A break-even discount is a limit in this model, not a recommended promotion. You still need room for missing costs and a worthwhile profit. This tool does not predict whether a discount will generate more orders.

When a spreadsheet helps — and when it does not

Use the free tool for one pricing decision. The paid workbook is for manually keeping actual sales records. If your store already reports the costs and profit you need, you may not need another workbook. Shopify describes its built-in profit reports here.

Before trusting a fee number

Check your own platform and country. For example, Gumroad separates direct-sale and discovery fees in its official pricing page. Enter the rate that applies to you; the example above is illustrative and is not Gumroad's fee schedule.
